Homework 2 - Photomanipulation

Before editing image:

When I have started working on this picture I wondered what can I do to enhance the narrative of the picture. After I managed to analyse the picture better I noticed the message "Father Forgive" behind the cross so I have decided to edit the photo in such way that the message will be the "soul" of the image. The first thing which I have done was to select the background of the image with the Magic Wand Tool, each window, and after that to delete it. After I have deleted the background I created a new layer where I have added a stellar background to accentuate the powerful meaning of the main message. After I managed to finish the background I decided to add an Iris Blur to persuade the viewer to focus his attention on the cross and the powerful message behind it.

The image which I have used as a new background. It is a picture which I took from Google Images:

The main idea for this image was to amplify the loneliness feeling emanated by the person. The first thing which I have done was to crop the original photo to focus more on the person rather the whole image. To accentuate even more the solitude of the person I decided to use Selective Colour to grey out the rest of the landscape leaving the person coloured. I chose to do that in order to sketch the desolation of our "character", creating a grey and cold world where this "character" can fit. In order to start the Selective Colour process, I had to transform the image into a black & white one which I have managed to do by using an adjustment layer where I selected the Black & White adjustment. To colour back the person I went to the Brush Panel and I chose a soft round brush and selected the black colour to colour over the body. In this was I managed to mask out the Black & White adjustment this resulting in colouring the body of the "character".

2D and GUI Design Task

The first element which I have designed for the main menu was the background. I took an image from Google Images with an underwater cave, this being the theme for my ALL project, and I have started to edit it

 The original picture:

After I analysed the image I have observed that at the top right of the image a word is written so I decided to get rid of it. The first step which I have done was to duplicate the layer, after that with the Lasso Tool I have selected the word and I have cut it, by going to the Edit window and selecting Cut. After I have cut it I selected the white area with the Magic Wand Tool, subsequently, I went back to the Edit window, I chose the Fill option and used the Content-Aware option. In order to make the white marks, white marks which left after I have filled the gap, blend with the rest of the image I have used the Spot Healing Brush Tool and I have passed it over the white marks, resulting in a perfect blend. After I got rid of the word, I decided to play a little with the contrast of the image and I made it darker than the original. I have decided to add a Gaussian Blur to make the image more interesting.

After I have finished editing the image I have started working for the original task, creating a GUI. I have started designing the buttons for the GUI and the first thing which I have done was to create a Rounded Rectangle and colour it using the Colour Picker. After I have done that I clicked on the Layer Style Icon (bottom right of the program) and I chose Gradient Overlay. After that, a window popped up where I set the Opacity and the Scale of the button. The next step was to switch to the Inner Glow tab where I set the opacity if the inner glow of the button and I chose the Normal Blend Mode. At the Drop Shadow of the window, I set the Distance of the shadow, the spread and the size, following that I went to the Stroke page and set its size to the size of 1 px. The last thing which I did was to apply a text on the button with the help of Horizontal Type Tool. For the rest of the buttons, I just duplicated the layer of the button and I have applied a horizontal text. To complete the main menu I added a text on the upper part of the image where I wrote the title of my ALL project.

Plane design and simple animation:

For one of the 3D Modelling tasks, I chose to design a plane and to apply some simple animations. The first thing which I have done was to create a cylinder with enough polygons. After I created the cylinder I transformed the cylinder in an editable poly and I arranged the lines of the polygons in such a way that I created space for the cockpit, wings and the tail. Following that, I scaled the entire plane to give it a more realistic look. For the wings, I selected two polygons from the middle part of the plane I have used the Extrude tool to create the wings. The wings were created but to give them a more realistic look I had to move them a bit backwards so I selected the 4 vertexes from the tips of the wings and with the Soft Selection, which I extended till the fuselage of the plane (this is meaning that the whole wing will be affected by Soft Selection), I moved the vertexes backwards resulting in some nicely shaped wings. For the tail, I used the Bevel tool because the selected polygon can be designed to be thinner or thicker with the help of this tool. Also, I have used the same technique for the cockpit. To create the front part of the plane was relatively easy, the first thing which I have done was to use the Extrude to push polygons inside the cylinder, after that, I created the cone shaped object using the Bevel tool. The blades were created by using the Extrude tool, pushing some polygons inside the cylinder and then selecting the lines inside the gap and rotating them. For the back of the plane, I have used the Inset tool and the Extrude tool to create it. After I have done the plane, I detached the bottom part of the plane in order to be able to create an animation. To animate the newly created hatch I applied a pivot on one side of the object which will affect the object. The next step after modelling the plane and animating the hatch was to design the machine gun. For this, I have applied on a plane object a picture with a gun and I created a box shape which became the body of the gun and for the barrel, I have used a cylinder, the two objects were created separately and then I have attached them together. After I have finished modelling the gun, I have attached the plane to the gun and then I have textured the newly formed object. For texturing the cockpit and the plane I have used some free textures. To animate the machine gun recoil I have selected all the polygons used for the barrel and using the Select and Move tool I moved them backwards and brought them back after to their initial position.

 Castle walls modelling and terrain:

For the final task, I have 3d modelled a castle, the entrance for it and a terrain. The first thing which I have was the tower, I designed it using a cylinder object. Some of the top parts of the cylinder were extruded to give it a medieval design, also I have used the Bevel tool to create a small window. To create the wall I have extruded some polygons from the cylinder by adding more block, not stretching them. The next which I have done was to clone them 3 times in order to create a square shape. After I arranged them I have attached all the walls to one object. After that, I created a cone-shaped object on two towers, for that, I have used the Bevel tool and also I styled a bit more some of the bricks as it can be seen in the following picture.

After that I have created the entrance, for that, I have deleted some polygons and created new ones using the Bridge tool as it can be seen here:

For texturing I have used a free texture from textures.com and I have used a UVW Map to create a more realistic effect.

 The texture:

For the terrain I have created a new plane object, I added to the plane a Displace from the Modifier List. As the bitmap I used the following map, which I took from Google Images. To create the mountains I have changed the parameters of the Strength and Decay windows:
